The Volsunga Saga is based on the epic poems of the Norsemen and composed in 13th century Iceland. Later it would inspire Wagner’s Ring cycle and J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. This is a tale of the cursed treasure of the Rhine, a sword reforged and a magic ring of power, and the heroic deeds of Sigurd the dragon slayer, who acquires knowledge of the Runes from one of Odin’s Valkyries. One of the great books of world literature, many of the saga’s historical episodes may be traced to actual events that took place in the fourth and fifth centuries A.D., in the period of the great folk migration of Europe.

The Hamer edition is an unabridged and unaltered reproduction of the Volsunga Saga originally written in the 13th century in Icelandic and published in English in 1905 by the Norroena Society as part of a collection of books called the “Anglo-Saxon Classics”. Hamer is the Publishing arm of The Irminfolk Odinist Community.

These classic reproduction books published by Hamer are laboriously typeset by volunteers and are not scans from old withdrawn library “cull” books. These are reproduced from the Irminfolk’s original 1905 set of the Norroena Library in order to offer valuable resources to the study of Native European Spirituality.
